The intensity of the precipitation that fell in the region of Masada during the winter of 2003-2004 caused extensive damage to the archaeological finds at the site. This resulted in taking emergency measures, as is the case when a site is in danger. The director-generals’ committee convened and it was decided to expand the cooperation between the Nature and Parks Authority and the Antiquities Authority, with the aim of halting the process of destruction and weathering. A multi-year conservation plan was drawn up and a conservation team was established with representatives from both bodies. The team is engaged in implementing conservation and development measures that include:
1. Arranging drainage.
2. Stabilizing walls.
3. Stabilizing plaster.
4. Stone conservation.
5. Treating the western palace.
6. Treating the frescos in the northern palace.
7. Preparing a geniza in the synagogue for a torah.
8. Treating the water cisterns.
